Rhytidome is the most familiar part of a tree. Commonly referred to as bark, it is the outermost layer that covers the tree trunk. It is composed mostly of dead cells and is produced by the formation of multiple layers of suberized periderm, cortical and phloem tissue. It is the first layer of protection from insects, fungus, and bacteria that would otherwise attack the fragile living cells tissues of the trunk, branches and stems.
