ZEBRA LONGWING LARVAE

ZEBRA LONGWING LARVAE

ZEBRA LONGWING LARVAE

Zebra long winged caterpillars are white with black dots, stripes and soft black spikes. The larvae often feeds on passion vines, the host plant imparts noxious chemicals to the larvae which carry over to the adult butterflies. The relationship with the host plant is a strategic defense, predators find these chemicals distasteful and avoid eating both the larvae and adult butterflies. Although unpalatable to their predators, Zebra longwing caterpillars are harmless to humans. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heliconius_charithonia
